No one should be surprised that Michael Moore is out helping the conservatives again. Not that he wants to. He just loves the publicity too much — no matter how stupid his comments, or how much they damage the left. This time, referring to the uber-popular movie “American Sniper,” he called snipers cowards. Last time, he said Obama’s only accomplishment was being the first black President. His sniper comment is idiotic and
it just helps change the story from “The Bush-Cheney Disaster” to “Why do progressives hate the military?”. In fact most progressives are supportive of our enlisted men and women. If I was the Pope, I’d give this guy a punch in the nose.

When people (always non-veterans) say to me “Thank you for your service” (U.S. Army 1963-66) I always answer: “How do you know I was not at My Lai?” How do you know that my “service” was not in reality a disservice to the national security of this country or of other innocents? I suggest James Fallows’ article Chickenhawk Nation in the Atlantic. Brian Williams is but one case in point: cognitive dissonance. What it really means is “Thanks chump that you and your kind or your kids, the poor and of color, go to fight the wars we scream for as long as we and our kind do not have to go.” Dr. Samuel Johnson said “Every man thinks less of himself if and for not having been a soldier.” Why do the military brass not want a draft? In my time in the military I did not know one person, including myself, who went into the military for patriotic reasons; they were all mercenary reasons, or others, and from Maj Gen.Smedley Darlington Butler USMC, three times nominated, twice awarded the Medal of Honor:
“I spent thirty-three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country’s military service as a member of this country’s most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism….

It is not helpful to see things in black and white, and it makes your valid points far less credible. When people thank you, I would guess almost none of them are thinking you are a chump, and in fact your quote form Dr. Johnson indicates the exact opposite.
But the real point of the zFacts post is that Moore completely side-tracked the discussion with his nasty and false remark that snipers are cowards. The real point, is one you agree with; the Iraq war was completely irresponsible.
