In 1980, just before he won his first election, Bernie Sanders made a documentary about socialist Presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs. Bernie’s known the electoral score for 35 years. So why won’t he tell his supporters?
Debs ran for president five times, getting a high of 6% of the popular vote in 1912. If Bernie ran as a Democrat (which he’s not and never has been), he just might get as much as 28% of the vote!
That would leave the Republican candidate with 70% (2% independent), by far the biggest landslide of any president in history. Second place would then go to Lyndon Johnson who got 61% in 1964.
So how did I figure this? Gallup asked the questions. For example: “If your party ran a good candidate who was black would you vote for him?” 96% of Democrats said yes as did 89% of Independents. But when they asked about socialists (and the Republicans will trumpet this from the rooftops) they came in far worse than Muslims and even worse than atheists. Only 59% of Dems and 49% of Independents would vote for one. So scale back Obama’s Democratic vote by 59/96 and his independent vote by 49/89, and it’s not a pretty sight. But you can see all the ugly details here.
Now Bernie’s smart and has been facing this problem squarely for 35 years, so he knows he has no chance of winning. So what’s he up to. The same thing as Debs. He wants to educate people about Democratic Socialism. That’s what he’s always been about, and he makes no bones about it. That’s all well and good.
But, does anyone know why Bernie is not being honest with his supporters about that fact that he cannot win, and that that’s not what he’s up to? If you think you understand this. Please leave a comment and explain.
