The Democrats’ Fact Sheet for 2016
2,382 to win | Clinton | Sanders |
Pledged delegates | 23 | 21 |
Superdelegates | 362 | 8 |
Total | 385 | 29 |
There are 713 superdelegates (15% of the total). These are current or former party leaders and elected officials. Here, Hillary has a huge lead, but anything can still happen.
However, Bernie is strongest in states with a high percent of white liberals. Vermont ranks highest here and then Iowa and New Hampshire. As a consequence, Bernie would have needed to win 70% of Iowa‘s delegates to be on track for winning the nomination—but that does not take into account his momentum or Hillary’s superdelegates.
