Both Sanders and Clinton remember the political revolution that started in 1968, when the left forced President Johnson (LBJ) not to see a second term, after winning the second greatest landslide in 100 years. His chosen successor Hubert Humphrey was also doomed to an ignominious defeat.
The revolution continued with the decapitation of the party elite and a dis-empowering of party official in the primary process. This was orchestrated by McGovern who lost nomination in 1968, but with help from his new rules and all of us on the left gained the nomination in 1972. The times were different but you may find interesting the parallels between Senators McGovern and Sanders, and between the political forces that propelled them.
